a few people i know have been praising this show since it started, but i was never interested, because i don't understand football. then i caught a couple reruns on bravo, and realized that the show is barely about football at all. it's about people, families, relationships, small town politics, the trials of being a teenager... it's about all sorts of stuff that i can identify with, and it's done so, so well.
is anybody else watching this? if not, you should be! so good.

I got into "The Lights" at about the 5th episode, where Voodoo Tatum was QB. I started doing the episode for my work as a transcription guy... so I've essentially paid attention to every single word they've said for 14 episodes.
I really, really like the show for the reasons you mentioned.
That's not to say the show isn't about football at all. But it's more about a Football Town. Like anything good, it's about how things effect people.
I dig it's style and I dig how the kids make childish decisions even though they might have adult consequences. They aren't involved in big regatta scandals or in things that seem fabricated from the writers. It feels like the characters are making choices, and those choices lead to consequences and they have to deal with it.
It's an excellent show. Matt Saracen is the best. I've never actually pulled for a TV couple to get together, but I really was pulling for Matt and Julie. I really did... and still am.

I thought last night's episode (where they build the field) might have been their best episode. Best since the whole racism fall-out at least. Which was, like, 3 episodes ago.
