I got tickets to a press screening of the Incredible Hulk last night through aintitcoolnews.
Here are my Spoiler filled thoughts:
The movie feels very much like a big budget version of the old TV show. They open in Brazil where Bruce Banner is trying to learn to control the Hulk through martial arts training, and cure the Hulk through science. Of course this all goes to pot when he gets found by Thunderbolt Ross, and Emil Blonsky.
The rest of the movie consists of Bruce/ the Hulk running from the bad guys and trying to cure himself with the help of Betty Ross and the mysterious Mr. Blue. There are lots of cool action sequences culminating in the big finale where the Hulk fights Blonsky who by that point had become the Abomination.
Just like Iron Man, the movie is LOADED with stuff to set up sequels, and stuff that clearly plants this Hulk in the Marvel universe. The army uses Stark Industries technology, SHIELD has a hand in the film, the SUPER SOLDIER SERUM shows up, and of course, Tony Stark shows up too. The men who will become both the Leader and Doc Samson are in there too. Actually Samuel Sterns (the Leader) is a fairly important character.
The audience was going nuts through most of the movie, but I think I could hear people collectively shitting a brick when Tony Stark showed up at the end.
I really, really liked it. It was action packed, and also chock full of Hulkish pathos. Ed Norton and Tim Roth are both really great. They captured the feeling of the old show, and everything that's really good about the comic. I hope that this movie will wash out Ang Lee's Hulk from everyone's memory.
I think the thing I'm most struck by after seeing this and Iron Man is the scope of what Marvel is going for with these films. They are clearly setting up Avengers to be the biggest, most bad-ass comic book movie of all time. I love that they are creating a movie world, like their comic world, where Iron Man, Nick Fury, the Hulk, Captain America, and Thor can all co-exist in the same universe. I can't wait to see what they do next.
